Preparing a Chair Design File for Manufacturing (CAD & Spec)
Published by JP · Custom chair studio in Foshan, China
A good design file is what turns "I have an idea" into an accurate quote and a faithful sample. You do not need to be an engineer, but you do need to give the factory the right information. Here is the minimum a chair studio needs.
1. The drawing
A dimensioned 2D or 3D drawing beats a photo alone. Show front, side and top with seat height, overall height, width and depth. If you only have a sketch or sample, send that — the studio redraws it to spec before sampling.
2. The spec sheet
List materials (wood species or steel grade, foam density, fabric type and abrasion), finish (colour, RAL/Pantone), target weight limit and use (restaurant, hotel, home). The spec is what the quote and the sample are built from.
3. Reference images
Photos of the look you want — joinery detail, a colour on a wall, a similar chair — close gaps words leave. Label what you like and what you do not, so the sample targets the right thing.
4. Hand-off and sign-off
The factory returns a technical drawing from your file; you sign it off, then a sample follows. Keeping your original file with the signed drawing and approved sample gives you a clean paper trail into bulk.
