Custom Chair Upholstery: Fabric, Foam & Finish Options
Published by JP · Custom chair studio in Foshan, China
Upholstery decides how a chair feels, how long it lasts and whether it passes hospitality fire codes. For a custom chair it is also where your brand shows — the colour and hand of the fabric are the first thing a guest touches. Here is what to specify.
1. Fabric: type and abrasion
Polyester and woven blends resist abrasion and staining for contract use; velvet and linen read premium but need more care. Specify abrasion in Martindale cycles for commercial chairs (higher is tougher) and match the number to your traffic.
2. Foam density and comfort
Foam density, not thickness, drives comfort and life. Commercial seating sits on higher-density foam that springs back after years of use. Tell us the target sit and we tune density and a thin topping layer for hand-feel.
3. Fire retardancy
Hotels and public venues often require FR foam and fabric (e.g. CA TB117, UK BS5852, EN standards). Specify the market and we supply certified materials and keep the test records with your order.
4. Finish and care
Stain-resistant treatments, colourfastness and cleanability matter for turnover venues. Pick a finish you can wipe between services, and ask for a swatch under your real lighting before bulk.
