Custom Chair OEM/ODM: From Sketch to Sample
Published by JP · Custom chair studio in Foshan, China
For a brand, designer or distributor, an off-the-shelf catalogue chair rarely matches your concept, your dimensions or your margin. A custom chair OEM/ODM studio lets you start from a sketch, a photo or a physical sample and end with a chair that is unmistakably yours — without running a factory yourself. Here is how the path from idea to bulk order actually works.
1. OEM vs ODM: what each means for your chair
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means we build to your drawings, specs and brand: you own the design, we own the workshop and the quality system. ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means we start from our existing moulds and platforms and adapt them — change the fabric, the stain, the dimensions or the base — so you get a differentiated product fast and cheaply. Most buyers mix both: ODM for speed, OEM for a truly proprietary model.
2. From sketch to sample in about 10 days
Send a sketch, a CAD file or a sample chair. We return a technical drawing for sign-off, then a physical sample in roughly 10 days. The sample is the moment to check proportions, sit comfort, finish and weight — before any tooling money is committed. Changes at this stage cost almost nothing; changes after bulk production cost everything.
3. Tooling, moulds and what you own
For fully custom frames we may cut new jigs or moulds; for ODM adaptations we usually reuse existing tooling and only make new fixtures. Either way, the tooling tied to your design is held for your orders and not sold to your competitors. Ask for the tooling list and who owns it in writing — a serious studio will hand you that sheet without hesitation.
4. Low-MOQ batches: why 6 pieces is enough to start
You do not need a container to validate a custom chair. We run flexible small batches from 6 pieces per model, so you can test the market, shoot catalogue photos and refine the design before committing to volume. Mixing several models in one shipment keeps per-unit freight sane.
5. Quality gates before bulk
Before mass production we lock the approved sample as the reference, set tolerances, and agree on inspection points (weld, finish, foam density, colour). A written inspection checklist travels with the bulk order so what ships matches what you approved.
